RegulatorsAbout European Central Bank
The European Central Bank (ECB) is the central bank responsible for managing the euro and ensuring price stability across the Eurozone, which comprises the 20 European Union countries that have adopted the euro as their currency. Established in 1998 and headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, the ECB is a key institution of the European Union, operating independently to formulate and implement monetary policy. Its primary objectives include maintaining inflation at a stable rate of around 2%, safeguarding the purchasing power of the euro, and supporting economic growth and employment across the Eurozone. The ECB also oversees the banking system through the Single Supervisory Mechanism, ensuring financial stability and resilience. Additionally, it provides liquidity to financial institutions, manages foreign exchange reserves, and plays a significant role in the issuance of euro banknotes. The ECB’s decision-making is carried out by its Governing Council, which includes members from the national central banks of Eurozone countries and the ECB’s Executive Board.
